Wooden End-Grain Cutting Boards: Care and Maintenance

With proper care and cleaning, wooden end-grain cutting boards can be a long-lasting and hygienic kitchen tool. Here are some important steps for the care of wooden end-grain cutting boards:

Cleaning

Daily Cleaning: Wash the cutting board with warm water and mild soap after each use. Rinse the board under water and dry it immediately. Never wash it in the dishwasher, as high heat and water pressure can damage the board's structure.

Disinfection: After working with raw foods such as meat and chicken, it's important to disinfect the cutting board. Mix a few tablespoons of white vinegar with water (1:1 ratio) and spray the solution on the board's surface. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

Using Salt and Lemon: You can use salt and lemon to remove tough stains and odors. Sprinkle coarse salt on the board, and rub it with the cut side of a halved lemon. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then rinse with warm water and dry.

Maintenance and Protection

Oiling: Regularly oiling wooden end-grain cutting boards prevents the board from cracking and drying out. You can use natural wood oils, olive oil, linseed oil, or other liquid oils. It is recommended to oil a new board weekly for the first few weeks, then once a month.

Wax Application: To make your cutting board more resistant to water and stains, you can use wax mixed with natural oils. Apply a thin layer of this mixture to the clean and dry board, let it sit for a few hours, and then wipe off the excess with a clean cloth.

Proper Storage: Store the cutting board in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight or heat sources. Storing the board vertically allows for better air circulation, helping it dry properly and reducing the risk of deformation.

Things to Consider

Avoid Excessive Moisture: Wooden cutting boards can swell or crack if exposed to too much water, so avoid leaving them in water for long periods.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Be careful not to use abrasive or strong chemicals that may damage the board's surface.

Surface Renewal: If deep scratches or cracks develop on the board, you can gently sand the surface with fine sandpaper and then re-oil it.

By following these steps, you can use your wooden end-grain cutting board safely and healthily for many years.

Usage Tips

  • We do not recommend washing your knives in the dishwasher. The high temperatures in dishwashers can damage the structure that gives the knives their sharpness.
  • Wash your knife with warm water and the soft side of a sponge.
  • Use a cutting board to prevent the knife surface from being damaged and its sharpness from being affected.
  • Use a high-quality honing steel regularly to maintain its sharpness.
